Standard Measure

7/4/2005

I love Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch Cereal…  I’m not sure if its the crunch, the peanut buttery goodness or the sweetness of the milk when its all gone… maybe its everything, all of those things together and maybe without any one of those things i wouldn’t like it as much, i am addicted to it…

Maybe its the same with people… i think there are certain qualities about people that make you like them… its not really who they are its how you perceive those key qualities… if they have them you can overlook their inperfections, if they do not have them then you have difficulty seeing any good in them.  I’m not saying that this practice is right or wrong, only that it is an observation of things people do, present company included…  I think that when you find someone with that right mix of whatever, you have found someone special to you…. think about all of your friends.. most likely many of them have something in common, prob a lot in common… those similarities are the qualities you adore in a person…  I think that if you find a person w/ the right combination of those qualities and in the right amounts, you have found someone very special. you can become addicted to them.  I think that when you become addicted you lose perspective and you don’t see the imperfections anymore, everything you see in that person becomes a blur of confussion and illusion.  You tend to make excuses for their shortcomings, the same shortcomings that bother you in another person… You can’t see the forest for the trees.  I think that many people have a false sense of self b/c they tend to compare themselves to other people against different qualities… for example:

You have imperfection X…. you friend has the same imperfection, so you make yourself feel better by saying so-and-so is this way, and they are worse of b/c… (insert random, meaningless excuse here)

So you see, we take our imperfections and hold them up to other people to make ourselves feel better and we hold all of our imperfections to different people so that none of our problems really look that bad… its like trying to measure things w/ different sized rulers… you can’t make a fair comparision if you are using a different measure….

So use the same measure for everyone.  Pick one person to measure all of your shortcomings and imperfections against, so that everything is standard… and to make it easier maybe everyone else could measure against that same one person so that everyone has an idea of where they stand and what their imperfections are…

sorry for that random rant… take from it what you will, as for me i think i am going to have another bowl of cereal
